I am tall, skinny, and youthful, and if you squint hard enough, you can pretend it's 2008 and I'm Barack Obama. Yeah, the average Trump voter had an income around $70,000 and was pretty much a soft, Viagra-popping suburban dad. But I will win those white working-class guys in diners from 2016! Caption: The Vatican is holding a summit to discuss the problem of clerical sexual abuse. Leading bishops from around the world are attending the 4-day gathering. Expectations for concrete solutions are being downplayed by church officials and instead described as one phase in a long process. You'd think the Vatican would be further along at this point. In 2002, the Boston Globes investigative reporting exposed the Catholic archdiocese of Boston's patter of covering up sexual abuse of children by priests. Rather than report all these priests to the authorities, church leaders moved them to a different parish, even multiple times, when those priests sexually abused again. Church documents showed that the archbishop of Boston, Cardinal Bernard Law, had knowledge of many of these cases yet repeatedly said he didn't remember. I don't recall. Cardinal Law eventually resigned, but instead of ensuring Law faced legal action, Pope John Paul II gave him a position at the Vatican that included a large, comfortable apartment and, according to the N.Y. Times, A $12,000 monthly stipend. Cardinal Law died in 2017. It's long past time for reform from the Vatican.
