Caption: The Extraordinary Life of George Herbert Walker Bush. Born June 12, 1924. Attends Andover Academy from 1937-1942. Japan attacks Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941. Enlists in the Navy on his 18th birthday, June 12, 1942. June 9, 1943 Becomes the youngest commissioned pilot in the Navy. September 2, 1944 Bush is shot down, bails out and is rescued by a U.S. submarine. January 6, 1945 Married Barbara Pierce while on leave. Summer, 1948 Bush graduates from Yale and takes a job in W. Texas with an oil company. Bush's father, Prescott Bush, is elected to the U.S. Senate in 1952. In 1953, Bush partners with others to form Zapata Petroleum. After moving to Houston, Bush is elected chairman of the Harris County Republican Committee in 1963. Bush is elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1966. December 11, 1970 President Nixon appoints Bush as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Bush leaved the UN to become chairman of the Republican National Committee in January of 1973. In 1974, Bush becomes U.S. Liaison in Beijing. In 1976, Bush is appointed CIA Director by President Ford. November 4, 1980 The Reagan-Bush ticket defeats Carter-Mondale in a landslide. Bush sworn in as nation's 43rd vice president on January 20, 1981. Bush runs for president in 1988. The Bush-Quayle ticket beats Dukakis-Bentsen, Bush inaugurated as 41st President on January 20, 1989. During his administration, the Berlin Wall comes down. Iraq invades Kuwait in 1990. Bush leads global coalition to eject Iraq from Kuwait in January, 1991. Bush lives to see his son, Jeb, elected governor of Florida and his son, George W. Bush, elected 43rd president of the United States. On April 17, 2018, Barbara his beloved wife of 73 years passed away. Bush was hospitalized just a day after her funeral with a blood infection, but many wondered if it was from a broken heart. George H.W. Bush 1924 - 2018.

Caption: Fifty years ago, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. I was living in Alexandria, Virginia. I had lived in Mighigan's Upper Peninsula until March, 1968, and I had never met a black child prior to moving to the D.C. area. When I woke up the morning of April 5, King had died the night before. School was canceled. My dad drove us to Arlington to see Washington burning. Later in the spring of 1968, I saw Resurrection City, a huge plywood encampment on the Mall near the Lincoln Memorial - where King had given the I Have a Dream speech. Everyone remembers the Dream line ... the content of their character ... No one remembers these lines from the same 1969 speech: We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality. Hey! Mute! And: Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California. Fifty years is a long time ago. Feels like yesterday.
