Caption: Les Cathos Integristes. Contre le theatre. Charlie Hebdo. 100 coups de fouet, si vous n'etes pas morts de rire! So now the shock of the murders has turned to questioning Charlie Hebdo's satire. Some cartoonists and writers have described the cartoons as anti-Muslim, blasphemous, offensive and bigoted. The 2009 firing of a cartoonist who wrote and anti-Semitic column has also been mentioned ... First of all, I am not a big fan of bathroom humor. Secondly, and more seriously, it's a valid discussion to have about why the divisions between people are so deep and our political discourse have become toxic ... However: That is not what we should be talking about now. The only question we should be asking is: Do we condone threats or violence toward individuals because of what they say or draw, regardless of how offensive the words or images are? NO. Because what happens once we get beyond the easy images to condemn? What?? And who makes that decision? All people must have the right to express themselves without fear otherwise we risk losing all our freedoms.

Caption: A Cycle of Sadness. Crazy extremists threaten death for blasphemous cartoons against religion X. How dare you insult the prophet? Cartoonists exercise their free speech rights to draw blasphemous cartoons. Terrorists attack, killing cartoonists and several others. Even though mainstream religion X-ers find the cartoons offensive, they condemn the massacre. The terrorists are not us. These killings are against our beliefs! People conflate the two groups anyway. Houses of worship are attacked. Blam! Blam! Some cartoonists and other commentators take things to new extremes. Take that, religion X-ers! Extremist politicians thrive, further alienating minorities. More violent extremists emerge.
